You’re here! Welcome back to another installment of ¿Qué Vamo’ Hacer?—a curated line-up of events and things to do in Nueva York by Latinos, for Latinos.
It’s freezing this week, and while we fully support señora activities (i.e. staying the hell inside), there are a lot of exciting things happening throughout the city this week that are worth leaving your apartment for.
We’ve said it once twice and we’ll say it again—you’re here early and we’re just getting started. We’ve only soft-launched and we’re wide open to feedback, so we’d love to hear in the comments what you want to see from us. How frequently do you want us in your inbox? How far in advance do you want to know what’s going on? (This one’s a really big question—answer our poll below!) What types of events are you interested in?
Now, let’s get into it!
FOOD & DRINK
Ultramarinos Demar Pop-Up at Atla
Thursday, February 20 through Thursday, February 27
Atla
372 Lafayette Street, New York, NY 10012
Reservations
Elevated seafood restaurant Ultramarinos Demar from Ciudad de México is popping up at Atla for a week. Menu items from Chef Lucho Martínez include una tostada de callo laminado—scallop tostada—con chintextle, an indigenous smoked chili paste originating from Oaxaca, y un taco de pescado con fideo seco y frijoles puercos. If Panadería Rosetta's sold-out pop-up at Atla was any indication, you'll definitely want to snag a reservation for this.
Savor The Bronx at Tobalá
Through Sunday, February 23
Tobalá
3732 Riverdale Ave, Bronx, NY 10463
Reservations
The Bronx Tourism Council is hosting its own restaurant week, Savor The Bronx, happening through Sunday at select participating restaurants throughout the borough. We first heard about this exciting initiative through Tobalá, a family-owned Mexican restaurant in Riverdale serving Oaxacan-inspired cuisine with an impressive agave spirits selection. For Savor The Bronx, Tobalá is offering a 3-course prix fixe menu for $60 for dinner. We can't recommend Tobalá enough, especially for its stunning, tranquil decor and delicious cocktails featuring producer-owned mezcales, plus an exciting wine list of Mexican and South American wines. This is a great stop for dinner after visiting The Orchid Show: Mexican Modernism at the New York Botanical Garden. Interested in supporting other restaurants in the Bronx? See the full list of restaurants participating in Savor The Bronx.

12:00 PM - 6:00 PM
WSA
161 Water St, New York, NY 10038
Tickets: FREE
Water Street Associates, or WSA, the chic, downtown cultural hub housed inside an office building, is hosting CHA CHA Festival, a celebration of tea culture, every weekend throughout the month of February. The festival honors five Asian tea houses—oolong, pu-erh, hojicha, chai, and lotus—as imagined by Asian American and Pacific Islander creatives. The immersive festival offers free tea tastings, in addition to immersive experiences, culinary pop-ups, and cultural programming.

We checked out CHA CHA Festival on a rainy Sunday recently and we were in awe of how thoughtfully curated the entire festival was. The amount of tea to try and choose from was overwhelming, from the free tea sampling from Chinatown's CHICHA San Chen, to the blending workshop from One Love Community Fridge. The endless offerings of dessert from bakries and pastry artists including Lost Horse Cafe, FIGWASPE, Bougette, s-u-m Studio, and Fern & Aurora blew us away. We recommend arriving early and coming uncaffeinated and hungry to make the most of all there is to experience at this incredible event.
